Water Margin: Defiance is an action role-playing game. Set against the backdrop of the 14th-century Chinese literary classic Water Margin (Outlaws of the Marsh), it reinterprets a story about "destiny" and "choices."

Following the original novel's mythology, the game is built around the hidden premise that the "Thirty-Six Heavenly Spirits and Seventy-Two Earthly Demons" descended to the mortal world to cause chaos, while the "Thirty-Six Thunder Gods" were sent by heaven to subdue them. You play as a scion of a noble family caught in the crossfire of war — whether you are destined to be one of those demon-quelling Thunder Gods remains uncertain. Likewise, the true nature of those who hunt the demons — good or evil — is also unknown.

The story takes place during a critical period: after the Liangshan outlaws have accepted amnesty, following their northern campaign against the Liao, and as they march south to suppress the Fang La rebellion. It all begins with a seemingly ordinary request to borrow grain before the assault on Runzhou City…

When the outlaws of Liangshan are both righteous heroes fighting for justice and bloodthirsty demons who slaughter the innocent… as one who may be destined to vanquish demons, what will you do with the blade in your hand?
