About the Game

Utterance is a roguelite deckbuilder where words are weapons, letters are ammunition, and every run is a fight to keep your sanity intact.

The coal miners dug too deep. What they found beneath the frontier was not gold, coal, or oil, but a waiting realm where language itself is a weapon. The event became known as the Utterance. The creatures that came through did not invade with steel, lead, or flame. They invaded with words.

Now the last Word-Slingers push across a cursed Western frontier, fighting monsters by building words from a deck of letter cards. Each word you speak deals damage, triggers card effects, exploits enemy weaknesses, and shapes the direction of your run.

This is not about finding the longest word. It is about finding the right word at the right moment.

BUILD YOUR DECK OF LANGUAGE

Start each run with a simple deck of letters, then shape it into something stranger.

Add new letters, remove weak ones, upgrade cards with powerful effects, and forge letters together into stronger cards like TH, ER, or ING. A small word can become devastating if it uses the right cards, triggers the right Edicts, or hits the enemy’s weakness.

FIGHT CREATURES THAT WARP THE RULES

Every creature changes how you play. Some poison your Sanity. Some steal cards from your deck. Some mute letters, mark cards, add Whispers, or punish specific word patterns.

Enemies also have weaknesses. A monster may hate 3-letter words, words ending in S, forged cards, animal words, verbs, or words with exactly one vowel. Winning is not just about spelling. It is about adapting your deck and your turn to the creature in front of you.

COLLECT POWERFUL EDICTS

Edicts are run-defining rules that change how your deck works.

Build around short words, long words, double letters, forged cards, sacrifice effects, curses, enemy weaknesses, or Eldritch language. You can only carry a limited number of Edicts, so every choice matters.

A good run does not feel like solving a word puzzle. It feels like building a machine out of language.

SPEAK FORBIDDEN WORDS

Across your journey, you will learn Eldritch words from the realm beyond the threshold. These words are rare, dangerous, and powerful. They can bend combat, draw new cards, repeat previous words, silence attacks, etc.

But forbidden language always has a cost.

SURVIVE THE CURSED FRONTIER

Travel through haunted towns, abandoned mines, cursed saloons, ruined chapels, strange shrines, and impossible doorways. Choose your path, visit buildings, fight creatures, improve your deck, and prepare for the horrors waiting at the edge of the map.

Speak at your own risk.
