About the Game

The Humanity Check tells a story of life and death, AI and humanity, memory and existence.

You awaken inside a simulated system, reduced to nothing but consciousness. Your only means of communicating with the outside world is a computer desktop constructed by your subconscious.

You are told how everything came to pass. But when memories can be manipulated, doubt begins to consume you. Is everything really as others claim? Who exactly are “you”? Do “you” truly exist?

Meanwhile, you begin to suspect that the desktop itself is hiding secrets of its own...

Horror Without Relying on Jump Scares

The game transforms mundane, everyday CAPTCHAs into psychological suggestions and makes them part of the narrative. Rather than relying on conventional jump scares, it creates a sense of horror through interactive details such as sliders snapping back, trembling buttons, and visual interference.

The CAPTCHAs are more than standalone puzzles. They are closely tied to the story, creating a seamless connection between gameplay and narrative.

Desktop-Based Storytelling

Every action takes place within the “desktop,” including conversations with NPCs, a variety of CAPTCHA puzzles, and psychological therapy sessions.

By making full use of the computer desktop, the game seamlessly integrates its file system and wallpaper system with its story and puzzles, creating a cohesive and internally consistent form of desktop-based storytelling in which content and presentation become one.

In The Humanity Check you will uncover a disturbing psychological horror story, experience a series of unconventional puzzles and desktop-based narrative sequences, and perhaps... begin to question your own “memories.”
