THE VACANCY

You applied because you had no other option. NEXUS CORP had the only opening: Document Processing, workstation 7-A, sub-basement three. Good pay, full benefits, and no questions about the debt that drove you here.

The previous clerk, Amelie Rousseau, is listed as reassigned. She was Employee #46.

You are #47.

THE WORK

A form lands on your desk. Read it. Cross-check it against the terminal: employee records, department codes, working days, clearance levels, supervisors. The numbers rarely agree with each other.

Then decide. APPROVED or REJECTED.

Stamp wrong and Compliance notices. Stamp too slowly and the queue does.

THE PROTOCOL

Every form carries the prefix NX. Every stamp is a seal. Something was filed away in this building forty-seven years ago, and the paperwork is the only thing holding it shut.

The deeper you dig, the more the office answers back. Your sanity is a number in the corner of the screen. So is their suspicion of you.
