The year is 1863.

Steam and smoke darken the skies above Edo.

Advanced steam technology from the otherworldly realm of “Kadas” has transformed Japan into an unprecedented “mechanical metropolis” in just ten years. The Tokugawa Shogunate has changed with it, sending history down a path far removed from reality.

Hachiro Iba, a young swordsman of the Shinkage-ryu school, receives a secret mission from the legendary swordsman Nobutomo Otani: travel to Shimoda and escort a mysterious “cargo” to Kyoto.

But the cargo is no ordinary package.

It is a massive, ominous iron box.

When the box opens, a small blonde, blue-eyed girl emerges, resembling a Western doll.

Her name is Rin.

Who is she?
Why was she entrusted to Hachiro?
And what secret does she hold that connects her to the mysterious phenomenon known as “Anmitsu Tengu,” looming over the skies of Edo?

To fulfill his mission, Hachiro must escort Rin to Kyoto.

Along the way, he encounters the Shinsengumi, reformists of the Shogunate, anti-Shogunate rebels, foreign powers, and mysterious figures from another world.

Historical figures and alternate destinies collide in a Bakumatsu era ruled by steam-powered technology.

History has already deviated from its original course.
