About the Game

A Cozy Retro-Style JRPG

Explore the Shimmershoal Archipelago in this 2D JRPG  with cozy game aesthetics. You'll solve puzzles, engage in brainy turn-based combat, and gain new abilities to traverse Metroidvania-style obstacles in a densely packed world built for explorers.

Play as apprentice Lani and her fox companion, Keke, as Lani works to become a full-fledged guardian of the islands. These trials are filled with charming characters, funny and heartfelt conversations, scuffles with dangerous critters, and loads of secrets for the curious explorer.

The Archipelago

Explore a micro open world densely packed with secrets, rewards, and surprises. Wander sandy shores meeting charming characters, and sail the ocean blue to hunt for treasure. Explore deep jungles to uncover lost secrets, puzzle through a haunted shipwreck, and brave the depths of a volcano. A tropical paradise awaits!

Relaxing Vibe, Deep Gameplay

Shimmershoal challenges the idea that cozy games need to have simple and shallow gameplay. The turn-based combat in Shimmershoal is quick to understand, but will push you to think creatively and adjust your strategies to defeat different kinds of enemies. New monsters will get you to think in new ways, and to use abilities and items you hadn't thought about before.

Foes in Shimmershoal follow their own unique attack patterns, and learning and planning around these patterns is the key to defeating them. Smart thinking is a recipe for success.

Take On the Fire Trials

Guide Lani and her fox companion, Keke, as she undertakes her Fire Trials. These ancient tests of wit, courage, and strength are all that stand in her way to becoming a Fire Warrior, the protectors of the islands she calls home. This harrowing journey across three in-game days will lead her all around the pristine tropical paradise of the Shimmershoal Archipelago, and put her face to face with monsters and the capricious-but-benevolent spirits of nature who live there.

Bossa Nova Soundtrack

Relax as you play with a rich and varied soundtrack of bossa nova and Latin jazz. You'll practically feel the sunshine through the sound waves!

A Solo Dev Project

Shimmershoal is being developed by just one person, Ian Caisley. I have a tiny budget and tiny resources, but I've packed as much love and care into this experience as I can. I really appreciate you giving my little game a look!
