About the Game

Old Hero is a short (15h or so) JRPG with early 90s graphics and gameplay but with modern storytelling and quality-of-life features.

KEY FEATURES

Turn-based Combat

Old school RPG combat is the name of the game! Forget over-the-top action sequences and bouts of button mashing until your thumb hurts, in Old Hero you'll need to use your brain to navigate the turn-based combat battles. Choosing the best options in battle, making deft use of defensive tactics, shrewd item purchasing and selection will all be a huge part of the challenging resource management. Alternatively, just grind experience and levels relentlessly until your party effortlessly flattens everything in its path!

8-bit Graphics

Boasting cutesy NES-era graphics and a colour palette of just 16 colours across every scene in the game, Old Hero is not limited by 1980s memory space and counts thousands of retro console-inspired tiles, images, spritesheets and animations – along with hundreds of uniquely designed maps of dungeons, towns, overworlds, interiors and secret areas!

Secrets Galore

What kind of classic RPG isn't filled with tonnes of satisfying-to-hunt-down chests, rooms and secret areas? Not this one! Dungeons, towns and overworld alike are filled with secrets, some as simple as a lone barrel holding a store of gold, some an invisible path that hides a valuable game-changing weapon. Of course, the very best secrets are the trickiest to unearth.

Rich Itemisation

Progressing through the game smoothly depends on getting to grips with a myriad of itemisation options! Whether it's deciding between offensive or defensive armours, the right element attack to focus on, or getting appropriate status protection for that irritating boss that keeps putting your healer to sleep, expect to live or die based on your choices!

Character-based Storytelling

Following classic JRPG tradition, our zany band of eight characters are up against insurmountable odds and a malevolent evil that threatens the entire world! This is no surface-level storytelling however! Each one of our integral characters will influence and drive the plot in their own unique way and, as if you needed to ask, there'll be humourous and heartfelt character interactions galore!
