About the Game

Learning Japanese can be hard.

But it can also be an adventure!

Nihongo Hunter is an adventure game with retro vibes that helps aspiring Japanese students get over the first hurdle of learning the basics (Hiragana and Katakana)!

You start on Hirajima Island, which hosts the Hiragana Dojo. On this island, all the locals will teach you Hiragana, and you will need to master all the hiragana gradually before you progress to each new location.

When you've mastered hiragana, you move on to Katajima Island to collect Katakana.

Learn Japanese while island-hopping!

The philosophy of the game is to let the player engage in a low-stakes adventure, where exposure and mastery of the basic building blocks of Japanese is necessary to progress!

For early access:

Travel through 4 different regions of Hirajima and talk to NPCs. If you can complete their challenges, they will teach you Hiragana and Vocabulary to add to your Hiragana Dex and Jisho.

In order to unlock the various regions, you must face the master of the Hiragana Dojo and level up your Hiragana Dex! Challenges include romaji to hiragana challenges and vice versa.

Katakana has also been added to the game through the Katajima island in the 0.2.0 update.

The game is feature-wise ready for full release, but will continue to be in early access for a while longer for smaller fixes and optimizations.
