About the Game

They classified magic. You're the leak.

For centuries, a cult has hidden at the very top of the State. They call themselves THE CONTINUITY: Agents in dark suits, Undersecretaries who have held office since before anyone can remember, and a Secretary that is not a person. They hunt mages, collar them, and feed their power to THE CORNERSTONE, the ancient thing the capital was built on.

You were one of their batteries. Today you escape. The collar is still on. The only way out is down.

The Descent

  • The Site - a secret detention facility that officially does not exist.
  • The Bureau - open-plan offices, possessed printers, closed doors.
  • The Archive - the evidence room where your grimoire waits as EXHIBIT #1.
  • The Underline - abandoned metro tunnels and a dead staff train full of things that should not be passengers.
  • The COG - the Continuity bunker, where the State ends and the worship begins.
  • The Temple - a gilded pavilion on a black lake, the elite's private retreat.
  • The Foundations - the first stone of the capital, and the thing it was laid on.
  • The Hollow - the cold, scaled masters the State has been paying rent to.
  • The Pandemonium - a city of demons where Hell runs on paperwork too.
  • The Gates - the bottom of everything, where the Secretary finally waits.

Features

  • A mage, not a marine - chain arcane bolts, frost shards, hail, chain lightning, fireballs, a necrosis ray, a falling comet, a holy beam called Heresy, and an iron cross for close work. Charge your shots for extra devastation.
  • Break the collar - start suppressed. Recover EXHIBIT #1, shatter the collar, and feel your full power come back.
  • A bestiary of bureaucracy - Agents, tactical squads, cultists, Archivists who stamp the dead back to their feet, sealed drones, chimeras, captive mages you can free, Nullifiers that make magic stop making sense, the Undersecretaries, and the Cornerstone itself.
  • Roguelite boon cards - pick a new power between levels and build a different mage every run.
  • Lore in the walls - memos, case files and PA announcements that start as office satire and get much less funny the deeper you go.
  • Doom-metal soundtrack whose intensity follows the fight.
  • Retro look, modern light - classic fake-3D in the spirit of the first-generation shooters, hand-made pixel-art sprites, heavy dynamic lighting and glow.

HEXECUTIVE ORDER is a work of fiction and satire. All organizations, characters and places are invented.

Read the memo. Then burn the building down.
