STORY

July 1799. Moha, near Huy, in the Department of the Ourthe.

The body of Nicolas Richelle, the village priest, is discovered in the presbytery. The man was tortured before being murdered. The premises have been thoroughly searched.

Captain Grégoire Lefèbvre, an officer of the mounted gendarmerie on his first assignment in the region, is tasked with investigating this murder, which bears a troubling resemblance to other attacks committed in the area around Huy.

The victim was a constitutional priest, one of those who accepted the authority of the Republic against the wishes of the Pope, and his parishioners despised him. A robbery gone wrong? Revenge? Or something else entirely?

Does the answer lie within Richelle's own dark secrets? What role might the hot-tempered Chevalier de Mélotte, a country gentleman, have played in this tragedy?

That is what Captain Lefèbvre must uncover.
