About the Game

In Gerrymap you practice gerrymandering: drawing maps to decide the outcome of elections.

A state has four districts. In most elections, its vote is split equally. Each party should have two districts, right?

NO! If we control redistricting, we pack the enemy party into just one district! This is the art of gerrymandering.

It's not always so simple. A "dummymander" could give away all your seats in a bad election year. An overly conservative map could make further gains difficult. Also, some areas are very elastic, others are not!

The VRA says you have to create majority-minority districts in some states. As you play on the Democratic side in the campaign, this will force you to pack your voters! And expect to draw a lot of squiggly lines.

Featuring:

  • A campaign mode with 10 states! Deal with the challenges Southern Democrats faced gerrymandering in 1990.

  • A sandbox mode with all 48 contiguous US states! 1976-2000 Presidential, Senate and Gubernatorial results for each state. Play around with it!

  • 1990 census data: Race, sex, age, household income, and educational attainment!
