About the Game

Fugitive Tense: A Game About Time

You wake up on a platform in a cloudscape.
A staircase slices upward into a sky that never quite agrees on what time it is.
A poem hangs in the air, clocks twitch on the walls, and a quiet timer at the top of your vision starts to tick down.

In Fugitive Tense time is your only real resource. Every step, every interaction, every wrong turn eats away at your remaining seconds. Safe zones lock the countdown in place for a moment of relief. Strange devices, contracts and artifacts let you buy a little more time, steal it, or sacrifice pieces of the world to gain it back.

Explore a handcrafted cloudscape that feels like walking inside a surrealist painting. At the base is your makeshift home: scattered furniture, clocks that refuse to agree, messages from earlier runs. Above you, the staircase leads to landing after landing, branching paths and impossible structures that only exist for a few moments before reality snaps back.

Each run you push a little higher before time runs out. You unlock shortcuts, discover new rules, and meet entities that treat seconds, minutes and years as things you can trade like currency. Sometimes you fall back to the start. Sometimes you simply run out of time and the world rewinds without you.

You are not fighting to stay alive forever. You are fighting for just a few more seconds.

KEY FEATURES

  • Open exploration of a surreal cloudscape
Step out over an endless sea of clouds and climb a vast staircase that twists through the sky. Explore platforms, corridors and impossible structures suspended high above the world, with hidden paths, shortcuts and vantage points to discover.

  • Environmental puzzles and secrets in a handcrafted world
Read the environment, study patterns in clocks and architecture, and use strange devices that bend local time. Safe rooms, hidden shrines and off-path platforms reward careful observation and curiosity rather than pure reflexes.

  • Dynamic weather and day/night system
Watch the sky evolve over the course of your attempts: soft dawn light, harsh noon glare, drifting storm fronts and late evening afterglow. Weather and lighting shifts subtly change mood, visibility and how the world feels on each run.

  • Atmospheric soundscape that responds to gameplay
A reactive soundscape follows your remaining time and location. Subtle drones and distant chimes stretch out in safe zones, while ticking, distorted echoes and uneasy motifs rise as your seconds run low or you step into stranger regions.

  • Time as a literal life bar
Your timer is health, stamina and currency in one. Every sprint, every interaction and every strange artifact has a time cost or reward. Build a run around buying seconds, trading long term safety for short term progress.

  • Safe zones and shifting rules
Certain areas freeze the countdown and allow you to breathe, plan and tinker. Others twist the rules, slowing or accelerating time around specific objects, or inverting how familiar mechanics behave.

  • Run-based structure with lasting knowledge
When your time hits zero, the world resets, but your understanding does not. You keep what you have learned about routes, systems and secrets, opening the way to new paths and endings.
