About the Game

A Blackjack Roguelike That Breaks Its Own Rules

You've been trapped in The Crucible — a cursed casino where the only way out is through the house. But the house cheats. To survive, you'll need to master card alchemy: fusing ordinary playing cards into extraordinary weapons, transmuting suits for strategic advantage, and bending the fundamental rules of blackjack to your will.

Blackjack Alchemist is a roguelike deckbuilder where everyone already knows the base mechanic. The depth comes from what you do to the cards.

The Alchemy System

This is the core of the game. Between rounds, visit the Alchemy Bench to transform your deck:

  • Card Fusion — Combine two cards into a new one that inherits properties from both. A 7 of Hearts + 3 of Spades becomes the 10 of Thorns, which damages your opponent every time they draw. 19+ discoverable recipes tracked in your Fusion Codex.

  • Transmutation — Change a card's suit without changing its value. Hearts heal, Diamonds pay gold, Spades grant shields, Clubs deal bonus damage. Tune your deck toward a strategy.

  • Enchantments — Attach a persistent modifier to any card. Make it Volatile (deal damage on draw), Magnetic (chain-draw the next card), Recursive (return to deck after play), or the legendary Philosopher's Stone (always counts as exactly what you need).

House Rules — Stack the Deck in Your Favour

After each boss fight, choose one of three House Rules that permanently alter how blackjack works for the rest of your run. Rules stack — by the final floor, you'll have up to 7 active at once.

  • Extended Table — Bust threshold moves from 21 to 25. Draw more cards, trigger more effects.

  • Five Card Charlie — Draw 5 cards without busting? Auto-win and deal double damage.

  • Ace in the Hole — Hold one card between hands. Pair it with the right enchantment.

  • The Gambler's Fallacy — Each consecutive loss increases your damage by +3. Embrace the losing streak.

  • Double or Nothing — All damage dealt and received is doubled. Glass cannon or full shield build — your call.

12 House Rules total, combinable into wildly different builds every run.

12 Opponents, Each With a Personality

Every opponent in The Crucible plays differently:

  • The Rat — Stands at 15. Steals your gold when he wins.

  • The Cardsharp — Swaps one of your drawn cards with one from his deck.

  • The Twins — Plays two hands simultaneously. Beat both or take damage.

  • The House (Final Boss) — Adapts mid-fight. Gains +1 to all card values each round. Three phases.

Every Run Is Different

  • Procedurally generated branching map — choose between combat, shops, rest sites, and random events

  • Escalating difficulty across 8 Antes, each demanding stronger combos to deal full damage

  • Meta-progression unlocks new starter decks, fusion recipes, enchantments, and difficulty stakes

  • Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum stakes for post-victory challenge

  • 30–50 minute full runs; failed runs end in 10–20 minutes — quick sessions or extended play

Built for Card Game Fans

If you've played Balatro, Slay the Spire, or Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers — you'll feel at home and find something new here. The blackjack foundation means zero learning curve for the base mechanic. Everything else is a deep, strategic rabbit hole.

  • Full Steam Deck support — controller-friendly UI, readable at handheld size

  • Full keyboard navigation and gamepad support

  • Steam Cloud saves

The house always wins. Become the house.
