About the Game

What is this game?

Retrograde Gleam is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure game set in a turn-of-the-millennium industrial town. The story begins on an ordinary night—after leaving an internet cafe, you find your bicycle is gone. What seems like a simple theft drags you into layers of trouble lurking in the alleys, where a much larger shadow begins to emerge from behind the veil of everyday life.
----------------------------------------------------------

How do you play?

The experience is built on two pillars: classic beat 'em up combat and dialogue-driven narrative exploration.

  • Arcade-Style Brawling: The combat system channels the direct, satisfying feel of classic arcade titles like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs or The King of Dragons. Use intuitive movement, attack, and block commands to engage in heated showdowns with various characters who stand in your way across street and factory settings.

  • A World Unlocked by Conversation: The game world is not fully open from the start. Instead, it progressively unlocks through key dialogues and story progression. Find the right person, uncover crucial information, and gain access to new areas—peeling back the city's secrets and the plot's truths layer by layer.

  • Fully supports both keyboard and gamepad for a flexible and nostalgic control experience.
    ----------------------------------------------------------

What can I experience in this nostalgic world?

  • A "Grounded" Mystery: It all starts with searching for a bicycle, leading to a series of increasingly perilous events. The narrative focuses on atmosphere and character, with suspense unfolding naturally through your exploration.

  • Pure Combat Joy: There is no complex stat progression. The heart of combat lies in your skill, timing, and strategy against different foes, returning to the fundamental fun of side-scrolling brawlers.

  • Collect Fragments of an Era: Keep an eye out for nostalgic items from the early 2000s scattered throughout the world, like vintage toy guns or Famicom cartridges. They will be cataloged in your personal "Memory Gallery," forming a unique collection of the era.

  • Immersive Audiovisual Atmosphere: Stroll through meticulously crafted pixel-art streetscapes of an industrial town, immersed in a potent nostalgic mood woven together by detailed environments, industrial ambient sounds, and a period-inspired soundtrack.
    ----------------------------------------------------------

How much content does the game have?

  • The planned full version will provide roughly 10 hours of main story gameplay. The world also holds additional side encounters, optional challenging fights, and full collection goals for completionists to discover.

Why is the game called 'Retrograde Gleam'?

The title draws inspiration from the concept of "reminiscence." "Retrograde" suggests a look backward, while "Gleam" implies a faint, cherished light from the past. It represents our wish to craft an experience that feels like time-traveling back to a period filled with personal memory and resonance.

What is the release plan for the game?

Retrograde Gleam is scheduled for a full release on Steam in late 2028. The game is currently in active development.
