DESCRIPTION

IndieGame.Fan connects players with independently made games and the people behind them. Its community explores what “indie” means through game discovery, transparent developer and publisher context, and Indie or Not voting.

IndieGame.Fan Awards 2026 celebrates standout games through player choices, bringing the same community spirit to recognising independent creators.

HISTORY

IndieGame.Fan began with a shared aim: help solo developers and self-published games get noticed. The team wanted to give players and developers a place to discuss independence and contribute to a clearer, more transparent definition.

That mission connects game discovery, the IndieGame.Fan Steam Collective and community voting. The Awards are the next step in celebrating the games and the people who make them.

AWARDS & VOTING

2026 TIMELINE

Nominations: October 1–31, 2026.
General voting: Starts November 1, 2026.
Final voting: December 1–15, 2026.

The format invites fans to choose between games in head-to-head matchups, across nomination and final rounds. Categories celebrate everything from solo development and first games to music, narrative and innovation.

Indie or Not is the site's separate indie-status vote. Players can review developer and publisher information, explore the context behind a game and contribute their view on its independence.

AWARD CATEGORIES & NOMINATION CRITERIA

Games must be listed by IndieGame.Fan and have at least 75% positive Steam reviews with a recorded review count. No minimum community Indie Score or vote count is required.

Regular categories require a Steam 1.0 release from November 1, 2025 through October 31, 2026. Early Access uses the first Steam Early Access date in the same window.

Game of the Year: Open to every game meeting the regular eligibility rules. Fans choose the standout overall experience of the year.

Emotional Impact: For an eligible game that leaves a lasting emotional impression through its play, characters, atmosphere or story.

Best Debut: The developer’s first released Steam game, with its full release in the qualifying window. Later releases do not disqualify that first game.

Tiny Game: Fans decide what makes a great small game. Scope and size are subjective, with no achievement-count, price, download-size or playtime threshold.

Innovation: For an eligible game that explores new ideas or takes an inventive approach to how games are played or experienced.

Game Design: For an eligible game whose mechanics, systems and player choices work together to create an exceptional play experience.

Music: For an eligible game whose music makes a memorable contribution to its atmosphere, identity or emotional impact.

Narrative: For an eligible game with compelling storytelling, whether through writing, characters, the world or player choices.

Solo Dev: The IndieGame.Fan team-size record must identify a solo developer, including accepted community corrections and manual reviews. The regular release window applies.

Best Visual: For an eligible game with distinctive art direction and visual expression, from its environments and characters to animation and presentation.

Early Access: First entered Steam Early Access during the qualifying window. A game can also enter regular categories if its Steam 1.0 release falls in that window.
